One of the greatest failures of the European Common Fisheries Policy is the vast amount of fish that is discarded into the oceans. There is widespread consensus that this waste of resources should be stopped or at least minimised. However, there are many different and contradictory options on how to achieve this goal.
Hot-on-the-heels of a Stakeholder Conference on Discards held by the European Commission on 3 May 2011, this Public Hearing at the European Parliament shall discuss some of the different options available to reduce or eliminate the problem. IEEP’s Indrani Lutchman will sit on the panel and present what measures are available other than a full-scale discarding ban.
