Work streams

Our work

IEEP’s work in the UK centres around two key themes:

Coherent and strategic approach to environmental policy in the UK

IEEP UK’s work in this area examines how a coherent and strategic approach can be built to better serve environmental protection in the UK.

Divergence in the UK/EU environment policy

With the withdrawal of the UK from the EU, as each side goes its separate ways, there is the potential for environmental law and policy to diverge. This will have a range of implications, not least for the protection of health and the environment.

Thematic policy work

Agriculture and land use

No longer in the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy, the UK’s four nations are forging ahead with the development of new agricultural policy frameworks.

Circular economy

UK policies to reduce the pressure on natural resources, to minimise and if possible, eliminate waste, help to create new business opportunities and deliver an environment that is built on sustainability.

Environmental governance

The UK Government has stressed the opportunity to be bolder with their environmental ambitions since leaving the European Union, to make policies and laws more tailored to the UK context and be a world leader in environment and sustainability policy.

Climate change

The UK Government’s 2008 Climate Change Act was the first of its kind in setting out a comprehensive mitigation and adaption plan to bring net emissions of targeted greenhouse gases to zero by 2050.

Trade and environment

The UK Government has stressed the opportunity to be bolder with their environmental ambitions since leaving the European Union, to make policies and laws more tailored to the UK context and be a world leader in environment and sustainability policy.

Biodiversity and ecosystem services

Tackling the biodiversity crisis and the declines in nature are essential for the future sustainability and resilience of both the terrestrial and marine environments.
