Nick is Head of Sustainability Policy Advocacy (UK and EU) at Aviva, where he co-ordinates – and helps develop – Aviva’s public policy advocacy positions relating to climate policy and broader topics of environmental sustainability in the UK and EU. In this role, Nick works closely with investment teams and other business units across the business to help identify key areas of public policy change that can help unlock greater levels of private investment in low carbon infrastructure and businesses across different sectors of the economy. Nick regularly engages with public policy makers in the UK and EU on a wide range of climate, low carbon, and environmental sustainability policy topics Nick also regularly feeds climate and net zero policy insights to investment, commercial and sustainability colleagues across the business.
Prior to joining Aviva in June 2023, Nick was the Executive Director of the Aldersgate Group from 2014 to 2023, a business membership organisation focused on driving policy change to support low carbon growth and achieve the UK’s net zero and nature restoration targets, chaired by former PM The Rt Hon Theresa May MP. Nick was responsible for the overall management of the organisation and oversaw a diverse policy programme capturing the net zero transition across multiple sectors of the economy, resource efficiency, nature restoration, green finance, low carbon skills and trade policy.
Nick was Head of Climate and Energy Policy at WWF-UK from 2010 to 2014, where he was responsible for overseeing WWF UK’s overall policy work programme on energy, transport, buildings and heavy industry as well as supporting WWF’s policy reports and campaigns at the EU and global level. Nick started his career as an energy and environmental law solicitor with city law firm CMS from 2004 to 2010. At CMS, Nick advised public and private sector clients on a range of renewable energy, carbon capture, nuclear, electricity market reform, and emissions trading projects and acquisitions in the UK and across Europe as well as on related policy and regulatory issues.
Nick holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice with Commendation from the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice (2004), a First Class LLB in English Law & German Law from the University of Kent (2003), where he also received the Cripps Harries Hall Prize for best undergraduate in Environmental Law (2003).
