IEEP UK Autumn Reception: Exploring UK and EU relations after Brexit

As both the UK and Europe head into momentous elections in 2024, we invite you to join us to review the environmental relationship since Brexit and look ahead to what the future may hold. Since the UK formally exited the EU on 31 December 2020, much has changed in the legislative, institutional and policy environments, including for the devolved nations of the United Kingdom.

Date

  • Thursday, 9 November 2023 – 3.30-6.00pm (GMT)

Location

  • The Westminster London, 30 John Islip St, London SW1P 4DD

The Institute of European Environmental Policy was at the ringside of the emergence of European environmental policy more than 40 years ago and continues to play a key role in informing and improving policy in both the UK and EU. We invite you to join us in a new phase of IEEP in the UK, to take stock of the impacts of Brexit on UK environmental policy and institutions, as well as bilateral UK-EU environmental relations.

At a dynamic time of increasing openness to Europe, what could the UK’s role be in shaping a bilateral relationship with benefits for nature restoration, climate action and community wellbeing in both regions?

Leading the conversation will be a Keynote Address by Nigel Haigh OBE, IEEP UK’s influential former founder and director, reflecting on the key role played by IEEP in the formation of UK-Europe environmental policy and institutions, putting into UK-EU relationship into historical perspective. This will be followed by a panel discussion of leading experts and thought leaders on the future for environmental policy and UK-European cooperation.

Speakers

  • Princess Marie-Esméralda of Belgium, Lady Moncada
  • Nigel Haigh OBE, Honorary Fellow, IEEP UK
  • Rachel Solomon Williams, CEO, Aldersgate Group
  • Shane Tomlinson, Co-CEO, E3G
  • Katie-Jo Luxton, Director of Conservation, RSPB
  • Michael Nicholson, Head of UK Environmental Policy, IEEP UK

The evening will also be an opportunity to introduce IEEP UK’s new Executive Director and share our ambitious new programme of work tracking divergence in UK-EU environmental policy and the implications for governance and the devolved nations of the UK.

Drinks will be provided after the discussion for an evening networking reception.

If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Michael Nicholson (mnicholson@ieep.eu). A private link to the event’s livestream can also be provided upon request to Michael Nicholson at the contact provided above.
