All at Sea

AUTHORS: Eleanor Mackay-Clem Attwood-Malcolm Fergusson-Ian Skinner

In the UK Department of Transport’s ongoing review of its policy towards ports, there is a perceived lack of consideration being given to the sector’s carbon dioxide emissions. In this context, IEEP was commissioned by Friends of the Earth to draft a paper assessing the extent of shipping’s carbon dioxide emissions and to review the range of measures that could reduce such emissions. The paper also reviewed the UK policy approach, both actual and proposed, to reducing carbon dioxide emissions from both shipping, and the subsequent land-based freight travel that is also generated. It concludes that the UK policy framework does not adequately recognise, or take measures to reduce, carbon dioxide emissions from shipping.
