Car Sharing: The Motivations of Industry

AUTHORS: Martina Herodes-Ian Skinner

Vehicle manufacturers, car rental companies and oil companies are becoming involved in car sharing as sponsors or owners. The aim of the research behind this paper was to identify whether this was the beginning of a move towards a more service-based sustainable transport system, or whether there were other motivations. We conclude that manufacturers do not yet see car sharing as a potential core business, although some see other potential benefits from car sharing, such as improving their corporate image or providing a platform for testing new technologies or transport solutions.
