Divergence in UK/EU environment policy

Tracking legislation

IEEP UK monitors the development of EU and UK legislation across a wide range of thematic areas such as environment, climate, marine, transport and agriculture.

Our analysis of divergence in environmental policy is based on the raw data and information generated by our legislative tracker and informs our policy discussions. Our current tracking of legislation is based on longstanding tradition, experience and expertise of the EU and UK political processes. The Manual of European Environmental Policy, up until it ceased publication in 2012, was the forerunner of our current legislative tracking work.

The preview tables linked below provide snapshots from one year (2022of the legislation we track across various environmental themes such as air, water, waste & circular economy, climate, chemicals, marine, nature & biodiversity, for both the UK and EU.

We also monitor developments in legislation across other thematic topics which we consider to have direct relevance for environmental policy including agriculture, energy, transport, trade as well as cross-cutting legislation, at both the EU and UK (4 nation) level. We also track proposed legislation.

Find out more about how IEEP UK uses this data to analyse the degree of divergence or alignment of EU / UK / 4 nation environmental legislation, and the work of our divergence hub. IEEP UK also produces a separate tracker of the EU Simplification (Omnibus) agenda where it relates to environmental legislation.
