Chemicals

The ‘Cinderella’ of environmental policy – is how distinguished chemicals expert and former IEEP Director Nigel Haigh OBE describes chemicals policy in his book, ‘EU Environmental policy, Its Journey to Centre Stage‘.

Nigel has produced a number of papers and delivered many speeches on the history and evolution of chemicals policy in Europe from the 1970’s to today. From ad hoc restrictions on the marketing and use of harmful substances to more systematic and proactive approaches to control and regulation and from the gradual shift in emphasis from examining chemicals in the workplace to chemicals in consumer products.

There are also a number of external, third party papers that are of particular relevance and interest to the development of chemicals policy and these are listed below too.
